Description

Extreme Performance

Utilizing Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC) instead of lower-grade CCA, these stranded pure copper conductors ensure stable DC power and pristine audio signals for commercial, office, or home theater low-voltage installations. Using 100% pure copper rather than CCA allows this cable to maintain lower DC resistance and maximum current capacity. This ensures clean, uninterrupted performance from day one, whether you are wiring a custom home theater or a commercial security system. See our Amperage Matrix below for maximum continuous amps per gauge.

Quality Guaranteed

Engineered with a 300V CL3R PVC jacket to restrict flame spread, meeting NEC Article 725 and 800 codes. Fully UL13 and c(ETL)us Listed Type CL3R/FPLR. It is the safe, CMR riser-rated choice for commercial and residential jobs. This rating confirms the cable resists vertical fire spread inside walls and between floors. To speed up your workflow, most gauges arrive in "spool in a box" packaging for smooth, tangle-free dispensing, while the heavier 14/4 variation ships on a sturdy wooden spool.

Versatile

Wire your low voltage systems with confidence. Available in multiple conductor counts and gauges from 14/2 to 22/6, this is the go-to wire for access control keypads, card readers, CCTV cameras, PA setups, and home audio. It is rated for Class 2 and Class 3 DC power circuits, smoke detectors, low voltage lighting, and alarms. For faster installations, the jacket includes a built-in rip cord for tool-free stripping and sequential footage markings every two feet. The inner conductors are also color-coded for quick polarity identification, as shown in our Conductor Color Matrix.

For Use Indoors

Designed for in-wall, non-plenum spaces and routing vertically between floors. The gray riser-rated jacket provides mild flame retardance to stop fire spread. Built for indoor residential and commercial runs. Please note that this cable is strictly engineered for indoor pulls and is not rated for outdoor applications or direct sunlight.

What certifications does this cable carry, and is it covered by a warranty?
It is cETLus Listed Type CL3R/FPLR compliant to UL 13:2015 Ed.4+R:18Mar2022 standards, and 300VAC (incidental contact) rated. In addition, this cable meets NEC Articles 725 and 800 requirements. Every spool is capacitance and DC resistance tested, and like all trueCABLE products it is backed by our Forever Warranty and US-based support team.
How far can I run this cable?
There is no single maximum length. It depends on the gauge, how much current the device draws and how much voltage drop it can tolerate. Heavier gauges (14 and 16 AWG) lose less voltage over distance than 18 or 22 AWG, so for long camera power or speaker runs, go up a gauge. The jacket is printed with sequential footage markings every two feet so you can measure your runs as you pull.
Can I splice or extend this cable?
Yes. Low-voltage cable can be spliced with properly rated connectors (crimp butt splices, lever-nut or push-in connectors, or soldered and heat-shrunk joints). Match conductor colors on both sides to keep polarity correct, and keep splices accessible for servicing if possible. Fewer splices means less resistance and fewer failure points, so run a continuous length whenever you can.
What lengths and packaging does it come in?
Every gauge and conductor count is available in 500ft and 1000ft. Most arrive in spool-in-a-box packaging that dispenses tangle-free straight from the box; the heavier 14 gauge ships on a sturdy wooden spool. The jacket also has a built-in rip cord for tool-free stripping.
Can I use this cable to power 12V devices or LED lights?
Yes, as long as the load is within the amperage rating for the gauge you choose and the circuit is Class 2 or Class 3. It is a common choice for 12V/24V cameras, access control, alarm panels and low-voltage lighting. For longer runs, increase conductor thickness to minimize voltage drop at the device.
Which conductor is positive and which is negative?
The conductors are color-coded for quick polarity identification: 2-conductor cable is red/black, 4-conductor adds white/green, and 6-conductor (22 AWG only) adds blue/brown. By convention red is positive (+) and black is negative (-), but always follow the wiring diagram for the device you are connecting.
Does low voltage wire need to be run in conduit?
In most residential and commercial indoor installations, Class 2 and Class 3 riser-rated cable like this does not require conduit. It can be run inside walls, through studs and vertically between floors as-is, which is what the CL3R/CMR rating certifies. Conduit may still be required by local code in certain spaces, or wherever the cable could be exposed to physical damage. Confirm with your local code or AHJ.
What can I use sound and security cable for?
It is rated for Class 2 and Class 3 low-voltage circuits, which covers most residential and commercial low-voltage work: security camera (CCTV) power, alarm panels and sensors, smoke detectors, access control keypads and card readers, PA systems, in-wall and home theater speakers, and low-voltage lighting. Choose the conductor count by how many wires the device needs: 2 conductors for simple power or speaker runs, 4 or 6 conductors for devices that need power plus signal pairs, such as access control or multi-zone sensors.
Can I use this cable outdoors or bury it?
No. This cable is engineered strictly for indoor installations. The gray PVC jacket is not UV rated or water-blocked, so it should not be exposed to direct sunlight, weather or direct burial.
What gauge (AWG) sound and security cable do I need?
It depends on how much current the device draws and how far the run is. As a general guide: 22 AWG is the standard choice for low-current signal runs like alarm sensors, door contacts, keypads and card readers; 18 AWG carries more current and is the common pick for 12V/24V camera power, access control, low-voltage lighting and longer sensor runs; 16 AWG and 14 AWG are for speaker/home audio, PA systems and higher-current DC loads or long runs where voltage drop matters. See the Amperage Matrix on this page for the maximum continuous amps per gauge.
Is this cable pure copper or copper-clad aluminum (CCA)?
100% pure, oxygen-free copper (OFC) stranded conductors. We do not use CCA. Pure copper has lower DC resistance, so it carries more current, loses less voltage over long runs and delivers cleaner audio than CCA cable of the same gauge.
What does CL3R / CMR riser rated mean, and can I use this cable in a plenum space?
CL3R (and the equivalent CMR rating) means the cable is cETLus Listed for riser use: it can be run inside walls and vertically between floors, and the jacket is designed to resist fire spreading from floor to floor. It is not plenum rated (CL3P/CMP), so it should not be installed in air-handling spaces such as drop ceilings or raised floors used for HVAC return air. Check your local code or AHJ if you are unsure which rating your space requires.
How many amps can this cable handle?
Maximum continuous amperage by gauge: 14 AWG - 15A, 16 AWG - 13A, 18 AWG - 5.6A, 22 AWG - 3A. These ratings are for our 100% pure copper (OFC) conductors. Copper-clad aluminum (CCA) cable of the same gauge cannot safely carry the same current.
