Field termination plugs are a key way of achieving good performance when you need a male plug end as opposed to using a plain RJ45. I strongly recommend you use them when you can, and leave the RJ45s to pre-terminated patch cables that come from a factory. If you need to make a high performing custom and reliable patch cord (male to male end) in the field, especially when using solid copper Ethernet, you will need to use field termination plugs at both ends. -

trueCABLE sells two great pieces of Ethernet cable termination hardware that makes putting male ends onto your cable runs easy and effective. Ironically, the less experienced installers are the folks who will benefit most from the usability of these accessories but less experienced installers don’t understand what they are for. What is this secret weapon that makes lives better and cables perform? They are known as Field Termination Plugs. They come in shielded and unshielded. Both are rated for Cat6A and are backwards compatible with Cat6 and even some thicker Cat5e cables. In a pinch, you can even use the shielded field termination plugs on unshielded Ethernet cable and not cause yourself any technical issues--although doing so might cause cable misidentification and is considered bad form. But, the option is there if need be. The primary factor is no matter what Category Ethernet cable you use (solid or stranded copper) our field terminations work with 23AWG and 24AWG conductors only. -

Sometimes when you terminate an Ethernet cable, the termination just doesn’t turn out right. Maybe it fails a test, or maybe it just doesn’t look good. If you terminate the cable with a crimp-on RJ45 modular plug, it gets cut off and thrown away. It can’t be reused. However, if you terminate the cable with a keystone jack or field termination plug, the connector can be reused up to twenty times. That's because keystone jacks and field termination plugs are not crimped on, they use Insulation Displacement Contacts (IDC) instead. Read on to see how to re-terminate an IDC connector. -
